Energy System Optimization for Confederated Networks of Green data centers

The research to be undertaken in collaboration between UPM, UCM and EPFL during the research stay consisted on two main goals: 1) developing strategies to integrate datacenters into the electrical grid; and 2) using networks of heterogeneous datacenters to increase energy efficiency in the execution of a workload without degrading its performance.
During the research stay, Marina Zapater has work not only in collaboration with the ESL group, but also with the PARSA Group at EPFL, ETH Zurich and the University of Bologna. The work undertaken proposes an architecture and model for highly-efficient servers that reduces server power by reducing voltage operation (i.e. the so called Near-Threshold Computing – NTC), which is backed up by the capabilities of the Fully Depleted Silicon on Insulator (FD-SOI) technology. Moreover, we are currently working on development of workload scheduling techniques to further reduce the power consumption of federated networks of datacenters.
This internship has allowed us to tighten bonds between UPM, UCM and ESL-EPFL for future research in collaboration. As a result, a paper has been accepted in a DATE 2016 special session, that will be presented in Dresden in March 2016. Moreover, this work will also be presented in a workshop on the HiPEAC Conference on January 2016 in Prague.
